Pub Review: Cold Bath Brewing Co., Harrogate

Updated: Apr 27

You can keep your hot tubs. We’d rather have a Cold Bath…

What to expect at Cold Bath Brewing Co.

The discovery of Harrogate’s mineral-rich springs in 1571 generated an influx of tourists, eager to benefit from the spas’ healing properties. Four and a half centuries later, those same waters have inspired beer that’s just the tonic for thirsty locals. Cold Bath Brewing Co., named after the street on which it was founded in 2017, creates delightfully clean beers in its micro-brewery on King’s Road and pipes them straight to their taproom below.

The pub, formerly a retail premises, has an industrial feel – there are high ceilings, bare flooring and a copper-topped bar – with some quirky items delivering a dash of conviviality. On a mezzanine level, brewers beaver away beside polished, shiny fermentation tanks: this is where the magic happens! The large taproom is spacious with ample seating, augmented by a substantial, covered outdoor space at the front. Next door, the Cold Bath Clubhouse hosts live music events, accommodates the YUZU Asian Street Food kitchen and can be hired for private events.

What’s to drink at Cold Bath Brewing Co.?

The team at Cold Bath are serious about beer. Just like a nice long bath, brewing is a process that shouldn’t be rushed; time is taken to develop recipes and get them right. ‘For us’, they say, ‘brewing is not a race to churn out as many styles as possible. It’s about doing the simple things right – every time.’ Sustainability and kindness to the planet is at the forefront of their ethos, too, so you can guarantee that the pints from Cold Bath will leave you feeling satisfyingly squeaky clean!

The drinks selection in the taproom is displayed on a TV screen above the bar and there’s a lot to choose from! When we visited, two casks and eight kegs showcased Cold Bath’s finest – bitter, stout, pilsner, lager, wheat beer, pale ale, two IPAs, a sour and an alcohol-free beer. Guest ales from DEYA Brewing Company (Cheltenham), Attic Brew Co. (Birmingham) and Harrogate Brewing Co. (Harrogate) were also in the mix, along with two ciders from Weston’s (Herefordshire). We had the Cold Bath wheat beer and bitter – both were excellent. If you’re already tempted, bottles from the core range can be purchased online.

What’s to eat at Cold Bath Brewing Co.?

YUZU Asian Street Food are kitchen residents at Cold Bath Clubhouse, neighbouring the taproom, but food can be ordered to either venue. This Yorkshire-based business makes a point of only collaborating with venues that serve great beer, so you know you’re in good hands! The menu is brimming with all of the East Asian big-hitters – bao buns, Korean fried chicken, gyoza and lashings of Katsu curry sauce; bold flavours that make a perfect pairing with a cold beer. You can view the menu here.
