Hop on down to this popular York pub to enjoy real ale, live music and pizza!
What to expect at The Hop
The Hop is a snazzy venue in York’s city centre on the busy Fossgate. The ornate brick building, crowned with a prominent eagle, was originally a late 19th-century fishmonger’s, a charming photograph of which can be found in the Explore York archives, here. The cobalt blue front gives way to this huge pub, a tale of two halves.
You are greeted upon entry by the sight of a very long bar, enhanced by beautifully-restored, Victorian glazed bricks and wallpaper displaying the pumpcards of The Hop’s owner, Ossett Brewery (Ossett, Wakefield). At the back of the building, an enormous, glass-ceilinged space is the setting for The Hop’s stone-baked pizzeria, where large paintings of former Dukes of York gaze upon pizza-eaters against exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is casual and social, with punters safe in the knowledge that they can rely on great quality from both the beer and the food.
What’s to drink at The Hop?
Owned by Ossett Brewery, it’s no surprise that six Ossett beers – Yorkshire Blonde, White Rat, Silver King, Butterley, Excelsius and YON – are regulars, along with Jute, Citra and Huckaback from Ossett’s offshoot, SALT Beer Factory (Saltaire, West Yorkshire). These, plus five rotating beers and guest ciders, won’t leave you short of choice. We chose an absolute classic, Titanic Brewery’s (Staffordshire) Plum Porter and Ossett’s lovely Butterley bitter. Wines, soft drinks and artisan spirits are also available.
What’s to eat at The Hop?
The Hop is famous for its sourdough pizzas, freshly stone-baked to perfection in their wood-fired pizza oven. All of the classics are on offer, plus house specials including their seafood Gamberetti (with garlic prawns and chorizo), vegetarian Blonde (spinach, red onion and honey-drizzled goat’s cheese) and spicy Vesuvio (with roquito chillis and nduja sausage). Vegan options are available too, as well as various garlic breads and sides. Keep an eye on The Hop’s website for weekly offers.
